Things to do in Orlando

Orlando is famous for theme parks, but the best trips usually mix the big-ticket attractions with a few local favorites. Plan for at least one “park day,” one “see the city” day, and one outdoor reset, and you’ll get a much fuller Orlando experience.

A must for many first-timers, Disney World is home to multiple theme parks plus dining, shopping, and entertainment districts, so you can tailor the day to your group’s pace.

Universal is a high-energy mix of rides, immersive lands, and entertainment, with Universal Studios Florida as a headliner park for movie-themed attractions.

Part theme park, part aquarium and animal experience, SeaWorld is known for thrill rides and marine-life encounters, which makes it a great “mix it up” day between the bigger resort parks.

International Drive is packed with restaurants and attractions, and ICON Park is a popular hub for easy, walkable entertainment. The Orlando Eye at ICON Park is an observation wheel that takes you up for skyline views and a fun break from full-day parks.

For a more local Orlando afternoon, Lake Eola’s paved loop and downtown views are an easy win. The swan boats are a classic, and Thornton Park nearby adds cafés and small-shop charm when you’re ready to wander.

Just north of downtown, Winter Park is a great “slower” day. The Scenic Boat Tour runs hour-long guided rides through the area’s lakes and canals, with plenty of scenery and neighborhood history along the way.

A calm, shaded break from the crowds, Leu Gardens is a 50-acre botanical oasis close to downtown with winding paths and lush, tropical landscaping.

Travel Tips for Driving in Orlando

Most neighborhood streets are posted around 25 to 35 mph, with higher limits on major roads. If you do not see a posted sign, Florida’s statutory defaults are 30 mph in business or residential districts and 55 mph on other roads, unless a lower local-street limit has been set.

Yes. Central Florida uses toll roads a lot, especially around the airport, theme parks, and the outer loops. Common routes include SR 528 (Beachline Expressway), SR 408 (East-West Expressway), and SR 417 (Central Florida GreeneWay).

In Downtown Orlando, garages and surface lots are usually the easiest. The City’s on-street metered parking is listed at $1 per hour, and the City also notes meters are free from 6 p.m. to 8 a.m., and free on Sundays and city holidays (City-operated locations).

At theme parks, expect paid parking and bigger traffic waves around park open and close, so parking lots can feel like their own commute.

Late morning through early afternoon is usually the least stressful. Try to avoid weekday commuter peaks and the theme-park rush around opening time and late afternoon, especially on I-4 and the roads feeding the resort areas.

Downtown is a straightforward drive from MCO. A common route is taking SR 528 away from the airport and connecting to SR 408, which runs across downtown. eep in mind both roads are often tolled, so it helps to know your toll plan before you pull out of the airport.

Expect the busiest traffic and most confusing interchanges around I-4 and the resort corridors. Congestion can build quickly in the morning and again late afternoon into evening, especially on weekends and during peak travel seasons.

  • Trust your GPS early. Lanes split fast near attractions, and missing a ramp can add time.
  • Plan extra buffer time for park opening and closing windows, since backups can start before you expect.
  • Pick a “park once” strategy when you can. If you’re headed to a theme park district
