Things to do in Denver

Denver mixes classic landmarks with neighborhoods that each feel like their own mini city. A rental car makes it easy to bounce between districts, then drive out for the views when you need a break from downtown.

Red Rocks is a must-see near Denver, even if you are not going to a concert. The natural red rock formations make it one of the most scenic venues in the country, and the surrounding park has short hikes and viewpoints that are great for a quick half-day trip. If you are attending a show, arrive early since parking and entry can take time.

Union Station is a great starting point for downtown Denver and a classic place to pause for food or a quick look around. From there, LoDo is easy to explore on foot with historic blocks, restaurants, and plenty of places to wander. It is also a convenient area to start an evening out before a game or event.

RiNo is Denver’s creative hub, known for murals, galleries, and a lively street scene. It is perfect for a self-guided walk and photo stops, with lots of casual spots to grab coffee or a bite along the way. Parking can fill up at peak times, so earlier visits are often easier.

The Denver Botanic Gardens are a calm break from the city, with themed gardens, seasonal blooms, and easy walking paths. It is a solid option when you want a slower pace, especially in spring and summer, or when you need a quieter afternoon between bigger plans.

The Denver Art Museum is a top cultural stop with a strong mix of permanent collections and rotating exhibits. It is a good indoor option year-round and easy to pair with nearby downtown sightseeing if you want to make a full afternoon of it.

Coors Field is a fun Denver experience during baseball season, and the surrounding area stays lively before and after games. If you are not catching a Rockies game, stadium tours can be a great way to see the ballpark and still check off a classic Denver landmark.

Travel Tips for Driving in Denver

Posted limits vary by road, but Colorado’s default speed limits are a good baseline: 25 mph in business districts, 30 mph in residential districts, and 65 mph on interstates/freeways unless otherwise posted.

Downtown is very garage-friendly, which is often the simplest option for visitors. Street parking is common too, and Denver’s on-street meters use PayByPhone, so you can start or extend time from your phone when allowed. In popular neighborhoods like LoDo, RiNo, and Cherry Creek, pay close attention to signs for time limits and resident-only areas.

Late morning through early afternoon is usually the smoothest window. Weekday congestion tends to spike during commute times, especially on I-25 and I-70. If you’re heading to the mountains, I-70 can be busiest Friday afternoons and Sunday return times.

Downtown Denver is about 24 to 25 miles from DEN.  In light traffic, the drive is often around 30 to 40 minutes, but it can take longer during rush hour or busy travel weekends. Most routes start on Peña Boulevard, the main road in and out of the airport, which connects to I-70 West toward downtown. Peña Boulevard can have construction and lane shifts at times, so it’s worth following your GPS guidance as you leave the airport.

Yes. You may run into tolls on routes like E-470, the Northwest Parkway, and Express Lanes in the region.

If you are heading into the foothills or up I-70, plan for quick weather changes and slower travel times as you gain elevation. Check the forecast and road conditions before you leave, keep extra water and warm layers in the car, and make sure your vehicle is ready for steep grades. In winter, traction laws and chain requirements can be activated during storms, so it is smart to build extra time and avoid pushing a tight schedule.

Most visitors find Denver straightforward, but a few local quirks can make it feel busy at first. Downtown has a lot of one-way streets, quick lane shifts, and heavier pedestrian and bike traffic in neighborhoods like LoDo and RiNo. Use your GPS early so you can pick the correct lane before turns, and plan to park once and walk when you are exploring the busiest areas.
