Things to do in Phoenix

Phoenix pairs Sonoran Desert scenery with big-city neighborhoods spread across the Valley. With a rental car from Enterprise, it’s easy to explore arts districts, iconic outdoor spots, and nearby desert escapes at your own pace.

One of the most iconic hikes in Phoenix, Camelback Mountain rewards early risers with sweeping city views. The two main routes, Echo Canyon and Cholla, are rated extremely difficult with steep climbs and exposed rock, so plan for an early start and bring plenty of water.

Set in Papago Park, the Desert Botanical Garden is a can’t-miss for seeing the Sonoran Desert up close. Wander well-marked trails through thousands of species of cacti, trees, and desert flowers, plus seasonal exhibits that make repeat visits worthwhile.

Roosevelt Row is downtown Phoenix’s walkable arts hub, known for colorful murals, galleries, and locally owned shops and eateries. It’s a great area for a self-guided street art loop and a good starting point for exploring downtown.

Located in Papago Park, the Phoenix Zoo is a popular family stop with a wide variety of animals and easy-to-navigate walking paths. It is a non-profit zoological park and the only AZA-accredited zoo in the Valley.

For a deeper cultural experience, the Heard Museum showcases American Indian art, from traditional works to contemporary creations, across multiple galleries. It’s one of the most respected museums in the region for learning about Indigenous creativity and storytelling.

Just north of Phoenix, Lake Pleasant is a favorite for boating, fishing, swimming, and desert views. It’s part of the Maricopa County park system, with amenities that make it an easy day trip when you want a break from city sightseeing.

Travel Tips for Driving in Phoenix

Speed limits vary by road, so follow posted signs, especially near schools and busy corridors. If no speed limit is posted, Arizona law sets 25 mph in a business or residential district and 65 mph in other locations as a baseline, with “reasonable and prudent” speed required based on conditions. Freeways around Phoenix such as I-10, I-17, Loop 101, and Loop 202 are commonly posted around the 55 to 65 mph range, depending on the area and construction.

Downtown Phoenix has a mix of garages, lots, and metered street parking. City meters and pay stations are enforced 8 a.m. to 10 p.m. daily, including weekends and holidays, and the City lists the typical rate at $1.50 per hour. Outside downtown, many neighborhoods offer easier street parking, but always check signs for time limits and permit zones.

Traffic is typically heaviest during weekday commute windows, especially on I-10, I-17, and the Loop freeways. For smoother drives, aim for late morning to early afternoon, and plan extra time if you are driving during the morning or evening rush.

Phoenix Sky Harbor International Airport is close to downtown, so it is usually a quick drive in light traffic. Many routes use I-10 (often via E Sky Harbor Boulevard), and your best option will depend on your terminal and real-time congestion.

No. Arizona’s state highway system does not have toll roads, so you should not expect toll charges on Phoenix-area highways.

Phoenix weather can change fast, especially in monsoon season. For flooded roads, follow the National Weather Service guidance: never drive through flooded roadways. For dust storms, ADOT’s “Pull Aside, Stay Alive” guidance advises avoiding the storm if possible, and if visibility drops, safely get completely off the roadway and turn off lights. Also plan for extreme heat. Vehicle interior temperatures can rise quickly, so do not leave children or pets in a parked car.
